Movement, Endurance, and Challenges
Tennis and cycling are integral parts of my life – but cycling has particularly shaped me. For me, it’s not just about collecting kilometers; it’s about the experiences, the challenges, and the inner strength I find on the bike. My journey in cycling is not a straightforward success story, but an example of how you can return from less athletic phases and achieve greatness.
From Everyday Rider to Endurance Athlete
There were times when I was far from the fitness needed for extreme distances. Weighing over 110 kilograms and without regular training, the world of elite sports seemed out of reach – but that challenge motivated me even more. Through discipline, enjoyment, and a determination to surpass myself, I managed to work my way back to the top tier. My goal wasn’t just to get fitter but to redefine my own limits and take on challenges that initially seemed impossible.
Legendary Challenges and Achievements
My journey has taken me to some of the world’s most demanding long-distance races. Here are a few highlights:
- Paris-Brest-Paris (1,230 km): One of the oldest and most prestigious long-distance races in the world. Completing it in under 50 hours was not only a physical test but also a mental challenge that taught me perseverance when the body is exhausted.
- Ötztaler Radmarathon (240 km, 5,500 meters of elevation): Tackling this in the same week as Paris-Brest-Paris, I managed to complete it in 8:15 hours despite my comparatively higher weight. Mountains have never been my forte, but I embraced the challenge.
- Trondheim-Oslo (540 km): An iconic route that I completed multiple times solo in under 16 hours, battling not only the clock but also wind and weather.
- 24-Hour Races like Rad am Ring, Kelheim, Schötz, and others: These events pushed me to my limits and showed how much fun endurance challenges can be in a community setting. I participated solo and often placed in the Top 10.
Each of these milestones is not just a sporting achievement but a reminder that big goals are attainable – no matter where you start.
